Birthathon 2007 Report!
Birdathon 2007 Bird List
This year the count went above our wildest dreams! WE COUNTED (and verified) 125 SPECIES!!
Five carloads and a boatload with teams of drivers, birders/spotters and compilers set off in the early morning of April 7 to find as many birds as they could. This count officially went from Midnight April 6 through Midnight April7. A 24 Hour hunt!
AoMC would like to thank, David and Sally Thorne for providing us with the best send off possible by providing us with a pre-Birdathon dinner at their lovely home and for allowing this bird-brained bunch to organize right in their living room. Special “At-a-Team” award for tenacity goes to “Team Harrington” for braving the chilly waters, high seas and strong winds of the Indian River Lagoon in their boat to count the birds on the sand bars and over the inlet at the crack of dawn.
Participants in the greatest Birdathon EVER for Audubon of Martin County were: Bill Wolters, Pam Hopkins, Bill Hudspeth and Glenna, Louise White, Nancy Price, June Beyman, Doug Warns, Madeline Warns, Laurie Odlum, Soo Whiting, Flip Harrington, David and Sally (of course), Bob and Marta Gordon.
Of course every team saw its special species. They were: Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, female Blue Grosbeak, Savannah Sparrow, Carolina warbler, Magnolia Warbler, Limpkin, Northern Rough-wing Swallow, Reddish Egret, Western & Eastern Kingbirds, Swallow-tailed Kite and the elusive Snail-Kite.
We look forward to adding YOU and your team to the hunters next year. Can your team beat “Team Whiting” with a bird count of 89?
Of course the REAL purpose of any Birdathon, besides contributing to the national data base, is to encourage Audubon members and non-members to contribute $ for each species we find. IF you still have not sent in your dollars per species, please write your check to the order of Audubon of Martin County and mail to Attn: Treasurer Bob Gordon. Your dollars go directly to AoMC, your LOCAL Audubon chapter, for Education programs, daily expenditures like, electricity, telephone, Taxes and this website. Thanks for your support. Top
